With the Spring Festival approaching, Shanghai Ocean Aquarium holds 2020 Spring Festival Exhibition from Jan 16th. This time, a variety of Corydoras species from South America come together to wish you a ‘mouse-ful’new year in 2020. Let’s try to find them at South America Zone in our aquarium!
Corydoras is a huge family with tenacious vitality and a long history. They are distributed in almost every river and tributaries of the Amazonian habitat. Many different Corydoras species have been differentiated by their respective range of activities. They are so petite. Their plates of bone-like material run the length of their bodies. There are two cute little "beards" around their mouth which are used to search for food. They are omnivorous fish. There are spines on their dorsal fins which used to protect themselves. Usually they move in groups at the bottom of the river. When the freshwater is anoxic, they can use the back end of the blood vessel-rich intestine to breathe air on the surface of the water to survive.
